The End of the High Holy Days and Starting Over
We've been through a non-stop High Holiday season beginning with 30 days of penitential prayers and going through Yom Kippur, a period of introspection, repentance, and renewal for the Jewish community.
Two more holidays to go: Simchat Torah & Shemini Atzeret
Simchat Torah
Known as “The Joy of the Torah” is the hakafot, held on both the eve and the morning of Simchat Torah, in which we march and dance with the Torah scrolls around ... the synagogue.
It's an astonish experience of being with your community to see the entire Torah unrolled.
The Torah is unrolled completely. the reading of the Torah is completed, and we immediately start reading it over again (Chabad) This practice highlights the cyclical nature of the reading of the Torah.
Shemini Atzeret
Know as the the “Eighth Day of Assembly, “God expresses how hard it is to separate from us at the end of a month full of holidays," and for that reason, Shemini Atzeret is a “bonus holiday,” to give us just one more day of celebrating together before the year marches on. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, a nineteenth century German rabbi, wrote that “Atzeret” means “storing up” because we must store up the gratitude and connection to God that we acquired throughout the entire fall holiday season.
