1. My mom taught me to get something new for the New Year. It's the Shabbat of All Shabbats.

2. Did you know that there are at least 5 Names for the Jewish New Year?

• Rosh Hashanah literally means "Head of the Year" because Rosh Hashana marks the point when we begin the new calendar year.
• Yom Harat Olam means "The Birthday of the World."
• Yom Hazikaron means "The Day of Remembering."
• Yom Hadin means "The Day of Judgment."
• Yom Teruah means "The Day of Sounding (the Shofar)." This is the actual name that the holiday is called in the Torah.*

3. We hear the shofar every day– a wake-up call to jostle us, to seriously taking stock of what we’ve done all year and make sure we are worthy of being written into the Book of Life. God sits in judgment, deciding whether or not we have merited to be inscribed in the divine book of life.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Thanks to G-d, this Sept. 15 marks my 8th year as a Breast Cancer survivor. I would not have made it without the support of my friends and family, local hospital support groups, and the YMCA Livestrong Program. 

I met other pink warriors, signed a few pink trucks with some firemen, all in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Preparing for Jewish New Year 

Elul is the last month of the Jewish year, and signals the nearness of the High Holy Days. There is a lot of preparation one needs to do, to be written (and sealed) in the Book of Life. 

Elul is a time to review one’s deeds and spiritual progress over the past year, and prepare for the upcoming “Days of Awe” of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

I've included some gift ideas. Please click on the images for more information. 



The common themes are Teshuvah (“return” to G d), Tefillah (prayer), Tzedakah (charity), and increased ahavat Yisrael (love for a fellow Jew).

Some of the basic customs and practices for the month of Elul:

• Each day of the month of Elul (except for Shabbat and the last day of Elul), we sound the shofar (ram’s horn) as a call to repentance.
• When writing a letter or meeting one another, we bless one another by including the greeting Ketivah vachatimah tovah—which roughly translates as “May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.”
• Chapter 27 of the Book of Psalms is added to the daily prayers, in the morning and afternoon.
• During the last week of Elul, in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah, the Selichot prayers are recited. On the first night they are recited at midnight; on the following days, in the early morning.

Rosh HaShanah: Jewish New Year

There are about 30 days until Jewish New Year. It's a reflective time for Jewish people prior to the High Holy Days: known as Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.

The shofar is blown every day now, through Rosh HaShana, until the final blast on Yom Kippur.

Each day, we add Psalm 27 to our morning and afternoon prayers. Here are my favorite parts:

The Lord is my light and my salvation—
