Tu Bishvat The New Year for Trees

The New Year for Trees Updated

The  New Year for trees is on the 15th of Shevat is celebrated this year on Jan. 25. Commonly known as Tu Bishvat, this day marks the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle.

We mark the 15th of Shevat by having a Seder, eating fruit mentioned in the Torah in its praise of the bounty of the Holy Land. Some have the tradition to eat something from all of the seven species – wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates – that have a special significance in Judaism.

Just like at Passover, there are four cups of wine at a Tu B’Shevat seder.

The tree of life is nothing other than Torah, as it is stated: “It is a tree of life to those who hold fast to it, and those who support it are joyous” (Proverbs 3:18).

I've only been to one TuBishvat Seder. See "How to Have a Tu Bishvat Seder" from Reform Judaism. The photo shows the variety of fruits and nuts. (I am NOT an affiliate)

I observe the holiday like a Jewish Arbor Day by planting trees in Israel through JUF.

How do you celebrate?
