Shabbat Zachor (“Sabbath [of] remembrance שבת זכור) is the Shabbat immediately preceding Purim. Deuteronomy 25:17-19, describing the attack by Amalek, is recounted. There is a tradition from the Talmud that Haman (boo!), the antagonist of the Purim story, was descended from Amalek. The portion that is read includes a commandment to remember the attack by Amalek, and therefore at this public reading both men and women make a special effort to hear the reading.

On Purim, Queen Esther saves the Jews from being killed, encouraged by her Uncle Mordechai. She's a heroine for all time.

Amalek & Hamas

The attack by Amalek, as described in the Torah (Exodus 17:8-16 and Deuteronomy 25:17-19), and the October 7, 2023, massacre of Jews by Hamas share haunting similarities in their brutality and targeting of the innocent.

Amalek’s attack on the Israelites was a ruthless ambush against the most vulnerable—those who were weary and lagging behind. The Torah describes Amalek as embodying unprovoked evil, striking without reason or mercy.

Similarly, on October 7, Hamas launched an unprecedented assault on Israeli civilians, murdering families, abducting children and the elderly, and committing acts of terror meant to instill fear and destruction. Both attacks were characterized by indiscriminate violence against non-combatants and a deep-seated hatred toward the Jewish people.

Jewish tradition commands us to remember Amalek and to work toward ensuring that such evil does not prevail. The horrors of October 7 remind us of this ancient obligation—to stand united, defend our people, and never forget. History may change, but the resilience of the Jewish spirit remains unwavering.

This post is written to remember the Bibas family in our hearts. We will not forget the murder of Shiri, Ariel & Kfir. We ALL stand with Yarden.

I am wearing part of a Batman costume on Purim, as are many other Jews.
